Annabel Poate-Joyner is a Chartered Clinical & Coaching Psychologist with over 30 years of professional experience, a Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and Visiting Fellow at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Bournemouth University.


Annabel is on the specialist BPS Registers of Clinical Psychologists & Coaching Psychologists and Approved Psychological Practice Supervisors specialising in reflective practice.

Annabel Poate-Joyner is Manging Director and Lead Clinician of APJ Psychological Consulting, providing high-quality independent Clinical, Coaching, Occupational Health, Medico-legal and Expert Witness services to the NHS, CQC, Local Authorities, Police Forces, CPS, Courts, Solicitors, Professional Regulation bodies, Private Sector Services, Businesses, and Charities.

Annabel sits on the BPS Expert Witness Committee and contributed to the BPS 'Psychologists as Expert Witnesses Guidelines and Procedure, 4th Edition ( 2017)' and BPS Mental Capacity Committee which co-authored  'Professional Practice Guidelines on Capacity & Consent (2019)'.

Annabel is a Specialist Professional Advisor for Care Quality Commission (CQC), Co-Founder of the Association of Psychologists on Boards (APOB) and a Trustee of Care of Police Survivors charity (COPS). She has published several articles, in Jane's Police Review and  Your Witness, Inclusive Boards charity website, and has several academic research articles in progress.

Throughout her career, Annabel has worked primarily in the fields of Mental Health,  Autistic Spectrum Disorders, and Learning Disability. 

Since 1998, Annabel has specialised in Policing, working clinically with police officers in county, national and international police and law enforcement organisations, holding several Force Psychologist posts and consultancy roles including Surrey Police, NCIS, NCA, CEOP, SOCA and Metropolitan Police Service, Dorset Police. Annabel is a longstanding Expert Advisor to the National Crime Agency and is recognised as the foremost Expert in Controlling and Coercive Behaviours and Domestic Abuse. She also held unique external contracts with MOD RMP and INTERPOL in Lyon to provide psychological supervision and management consultancy services.

Annabel is also an experienced Executive and Team Coach with over 15 years working with specialist teams, and with Senior Managers and Leaders and Human Resources at all organisational levels in the Policing, Local Government, Business and Charity Sectors. 


As an Executive Coach, Annabel coaches Senior Leaders and Politicians to  achieve the very best of themselves in their professional and personal worlds and to support them in balancing major professional challenges and demands with positive personal and family relationships in order to achieve and maintain good Mental Health and Wellbeing and prevent Burn Out.
